Debunking 5 Common Early Orthodontic Treatment Myths

There are quite a few myths about braces and going to the orthodontist. These myths could dissuade you from seeking treatment to straighten your teeth, so it’s a good idea to know the real deal when it comes to early orthodontic treatment, especially with our orthodontist in Coppell or at the office of our Flower Mound orthodontist.
The Myths
1. Everyone Who Offers Treatment Is an Orthodontist
You have to be careful, particularly if you plan to order aligners or other orthodontic appliances online. Some websites look quite official and/or splashed with colorful images that purport to show licenses and certifications. However, many of these websites have no affiliation with an orthodontist at all. To receive certification from the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), someone has to complete both schooling and a rigorously controlled residency.
2. It’s Tough to Pay for Braces
Yes, braces are generally expensive. However, members of the AAO usually offer reasonable and fair financing terms that can make orthodontic treatment affordable every month. Of course, you have to qualify for such financing. Generally, though, you’ll be able to choose from several options to find that which best fits your budget.
3. You Don’t Need to Go to the Office for an Examination
Sometimes, it does take a couple of years to complete an orthodontic treatment, but that’s not necessarily always the case. It could only take a month or two to accomplish what needs to be done. An AAO-certified orthodontist can advise you regarding how long your treatment will take and what’s involved. That’ll also include follow-up care after the removal of your braces.
4. It Takes Multiple Years
To achieve the best possible results from your orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist has to keep track of your progress. The only way to do that is if you go into the office for an examination. Also, if adjustments are necessary, your orthodontist won’t be able to make a home visit to perform the necessary corrections. You’ll have to go into the office for that. When you’re ready, fill out the appointment request form at the bottom right of our website.
5. Braces Are Always Metal
Back in 1819, Dr. Christophe-Francois Delabarre used wireframes as the first orthodontic braces. Orthodontists have made many improvements since then, and the latest improvements involve the materials from which these devices are made. For example, Invisalign braces are fashioned from medical-grade polymers. The combination of polymers is called “SmartTrack.” These devices are far more comfortable to use than metal and are removable for eating, drinking anything but water, or brushing your teeth.
